Real Stories: Overcoming Challenges as a New Phlebotomist – Candid experiences from recent graduates.

As a new phlebotomist, entering the healthcare profession can be an exciting and rewarding experience. However, it can also be challenging and overwhelming at times. We spoke with a few recent phlebotomy program graduates to hear about their candid experiences as they navigated the challenges of beginning their careers. Hear about overcoming these challenges as a new phlebotomist! Here are some of the most common challenges they faced, and how they overcame them:

Challenge #1 – Lack of Experience

Many new phlebotomists face the challenge of not having enough experience to feel confident in their abilities. This can make it difficult to establish rapport with patients and to perform skillfully.

One graduate spoke about how they overcame this. “I was worried that I wouldn’t know how to handle difficult patients or situations, so I took the time to research and practice my communication skills. I also asked my instructors and mentors for advice and tried to learn from my mistakes.”

Challenge #2 – Busy Workplaces

Another issue that many new phlebotomists face is trying to keep up with the fast pace and busy environment in healthcare clinics. It can be overwhelming trying to stay on top of appointments, maintain organization, and perform procedures efficiently.

One graduate recommended, “I had to work on my time management skills and prioritize my tasks. I would also do my best to stay organized by planning ahead and making sure I knew what was expected of me.”

Challenge #3 – Fear of Needles

The fear of needles is a common phobia that many new phlebotomists face. It can be challenging to face your fears while working with patients who may also feel fearful.

One graduate offered some words of encouragement, “I tried to remember that every person has their own fears, and that it’s okay to feel nervous. It helped me to practice deep breathing and visualization techniques before performing procedures.”

Challenge #4 – Dealing with Difficult Patients

Phlebotomy involves working with patients of all ages and backgrounds. Some patients may be more difficult to work with than others, which can be a challenge for new phlebotomists.

One graduate suggested, “I had to learn how to deal with difficult patients, which meant being patient, compassionate, and listening to their concerns. It was important for me to remain calm and professional, even when I encountered challenging situations.”

Overall, the experience of becoming a phlebotomist can be both challenging and rewarding. Success requires patience, hard work, and determination to overcome obstacles.
